No need to pinch out to zoom – this car really is that small. What you’re looking at here is a 1992 Suzuki Cappuccino, and it’s the “C” in the famed “ABC” series of kei cars.

All three of these cars are kei roadsters that came out of Japan’s bubble era. Kei cars – or Kei Jidosha – is a Japan-only vehicle classification for very tiny city cars. By law, Kei cars can be no larger than 3.3 meters long, 1.4 meters wide, and 2.0 meters tall. Engine size is capped at 660cc, and power output can be no greater than 63 horsepower.

With space being a concern in Japan, most modern kei cars are tall boxes, offering tons of practicality and room inside. But back in Japan’s heady bubble era, manufacturers took chances and built tiny cars like this.

And the Suzuki Cappuccino is one incredibly engineered car. You get four different roof styles, all stock, and all-in-one clever package. Thanks to its compact size, that three-cylinder DOHC engine is able to sit behind the front strut towers. And even with all the stock turbo plumbing, the Cappuccino has a perfect 50/50 weight balance with a driver inside.

This particular Cappuccino gets a few extra performance bits, including an upgraded turbo system, HKS intake and 16-inch Gram Lights wheels. It’s a street-legal go-kart, and it makes the Miata feel bloated.

The Suzuki Cappuccino is one of those cars that just makes you happy every time you see it. It’s a reminder of how awesome 1990s Japan was, and makes us wish they would build cars like this again.
