After more than twenty years away, Toyota finally released the newest version of its preeminent sports car — now dubbed the GR Supra — in 2020. Now Toyota is growing the Supra's appeal with the GR Supra 2.0.

It even makes the right kind of noise. Not loud, and certainly benefiting from lots of audio augmentation it is a great soundtrack nonetheless, especially considering the four cylinders up front instead of six. The car drives very well with great body control and zero roll through corners. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires wrap around a set of stylish 18-inch wheels, and they provide more than enough grip. This steering is immediate and exacting and the brakes stop you quickly with a nice, firm pedal feel.

The Supra's 2.0-liter engine comes from BMW and this four-cylinder turbocharged unitdelivers 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The torque kicks in quickly at 1550 rpm, helping the 2.0-liter feel quick off the line. Those figures are down to the six-cylinder Supra, but this car still gets you from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds flat and will take you all the way to 155 mph. An eight-speed automatic ZF transmission helps get the power to the road. It is quick, crisp, efficient and helps reduce fuel consumption. According to the EPA, the Supra delivers a figure of 28 miles per gallon combined, its city score comes in at 25 mpg and its highway rating is 32 mpg.

Honestly I think the Supra looks stunning, this is not a car for the shy and retiring as the car draws attention everywhere it goes. Low slung, with a long bonnet and short rear end, you slide down low into a driver’s seat positioned back by the rear axle , which means the driving position is spot on and visibility is better than you might expect. The Supra isn't particularly wide, or large in any dimension for that matter. It is longer than a Miata and shorter than a Mustang, fitting nicely between those two competitors. The car is well proportioned, it looks modern, turns heads and it has a double-bubble roof.

Inside the leather-and-Alcantara-covered seats are comfortable and offer plenty of support. However the seats are manually adjustable unlike in higher-end models, but you are still able to maneuver the controls easily enough to find a good driving position. The cabin is quiet and refined enough at speed and the infotainment system is from BMW and works well but it could use Android Auto as Apple CarPlay is included. The trunk is petite, though it handled a shopping run well so it should be spacious enough to carry luggage for two people.

Compared to six-cylinder models, the Supra 2.0 is down on horsepower and torque, it also has smaller brakes, no strut-tower-to-radiator-support reinforcements, fixed rather than adaptive dampers and a standard differential. On the plus side, it is over 200 pounds lighter, the engine is pushed back which means better weight distribution and it is a lot more affordable. My test vehicle had a sticker price of $47,895, that included the $3,485 safety and technology package, a $425 paint job and $995 in delivery fees. However in comparison, the Supra 3.0 starts at $52k and goes up sharply from there.

In the end even down 127 horsepower the four-cylinder Supra is good fun. Given that the four-cylinder model is visually all but indistinguishable from its six-cylinder sibling it makes a more affordable case for people who are keen to start modifying their cars after they take delivery. But even in stock form, the 2.0-liter car is a quick, fun rear wheel drive sports car that looks great and delivers plenty of smiles.
