At the Tokyo Motor Show last fall, Honda showed us a minor model change for the current Civic Type R. That car has been delayed until later this year or early 2021 due to coronavirus-related production delays. But the bigger news is what our industry watchers tell us is coming next: a 5th-generation, 400-horsepower, all-wheel-drive, hybrid Type R. 

Wow, that's a mouthful, but look at those numbers. That's legitimate pony car power to compete not only with other Japanese and European hot hatches, but also with Detroit domestic muscle.

Next-Gen Civic Type R: Expect 400 HP AWD Hybrid

A $50,000 Civic? That's the price that our industry informants tell us Honda is aiming for with the next-gen Type R. While $50K might seem pretty dear for a Civic, the Type R is no regular Civic, nor will the 5th-gen version be any regular Type R. The next evolution is expected to be a 400-horsepower all-wheel-drive hybrid. Honda is already using this technology on the current NSX, so expect to see the trickle-down effect on the next CTR.

The real question is: how will it look in real-life? So far we're only speculating on renderings. James also muses that Honda could release a Nurburgring special edition to reclaim the fastest-lap record in a front-drive car before unleashing the next-gen AWD version.
