If you can't wait until 2024, when Nissan's famed R34 Skyline will be legal to import as a historic vehicle, here are three ways you can legally import an R34 right now.

One way to get your R34 fix is to import one as a race car. It doesn't need to be 25 years old, but importing one requires some dedicated legwork. You'll typically need a manufacturer's letter attesting to the car's significance, the car must have features that make it unsuitable for street use (full roll cage, for example), and it must be a race car used in a sanctioned racing series. You won't be able to pass it off as a weekend track-day special. And think twice if you plan to convert a race car to a street car; you could face some unsavory legal consequences.

One way to get your R34 Skyline fix in the States is to import an R34 under the Show Or Display regulation. This rule is sometimes called the Bill Gates Law, as the billionaire helped push it through after he unsuccessfully tried to import a Porsche 959 (Gates's car famously sat in U.S. Customs lockup for 13 years until the Show Or Display law passed in 1999). The SOD law allows import of cars deemed of "historical or technological significance," and typically only allows a car to be driven 2,500 miles annually. If you don't plan to make your R34 a daily driver, this is a good way to get behind the wheel.

One final way to get behind the wheel of your own USA legal R34 Skyline in the U.S. is to find one of the remaining cars imported by Motorex in the early 2000s. Motorex was a registered importer that modified Skylines to bring them into compliance with U.S. federal safety and emissions standards. Motorex even managed to get its Skylines crash-tested and certified. Late actor Paul Walker was a client; the Skyline highlighted here belonged to him. If neither of the three methods here work for you, take heart; the R34 is eligible for less restrictive import when it turns 25 years old, in 2024.
