Robbie meets up at Ebisu circuit with friend Rob to check out his 1984 Toyota Sprinter Trueno. This particular AE86 is impressively low, with wide stance, loads of custom parts and and tires at maximum stretch.

It might be a Toyota, but the owner of this AE86 opted for a Mitsubishi factory color to get closer to the maroon look he wanted. The front and rear ends, body kit and fender flares are sourced from different suppliers, giving this Hachi a custom look that's still instantly familiar. Even the OZ Turbo wheels, originally a two-piece wheel, were rebuilt into three-piece units with converted hub adapters.

Rob, the owner of this AE86, actually wanted something that looked similarly aggressive to Nissan's Silvia/S chassis cars, with bold aero package and slammed stance. And although it might look challenging given that it rides so close to the ground, this is a street car that also occasionally gets out on the track.

Owner Rob swapped in a fully-built engine with 20-valve block, oversized pistons, individual throttle bodies, and custom ECU. Not one to overlook the details, Rob also added hood-lift struts, patterned valve cover gasket, and a barely-functioning A/C unit, the latter a necessity from the time this car and owner lived in the tropical climate of Okinawa.

After car owner Rob goes out for some laps, host Robbie gets behind the wheel. He's never driven a Hachi that rides so low to the ground and wonders how it will handle out on the track. With the exception of a stiff suspension and bouncing ride, Robbie is surprised at the car's driveability, especially its easy braking and just-enough power to break traction without being overpowering for the street.

This 1984 Sprinter Trueno might be easy to drive overall — despite its low stance — Robbie forgot just how demanding a mid-80s car without power steering can be. Car owner Rob then asks us to imagine muscling this 86 around a track in tropical Okinawa, during the summer, with the windows up and no air-conditioning. Pass. 

Still, Robbie's reminded again of the AE86's inherent charms after his session. You will be too if you have the chance to get behind the wheel someday.
