Photographer Larry Chen sat down with the Podspeed hosts to recall when he shot the Nissan Clubsport 23, a one-off concept built specifically for the SEMA Show (it was, in fact, Nissan's first factory-backed SEMA Show project). Chen remembers shooting the car, looking at the specifications, and realizing that the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 concept was likely the next evolution of the 300ZX, a car that Nissan discontinued in 1996. That Clubsport 23 was essentially the concept for today's Proto Z and forthcoming 400ZX— the concept's concept, if you will.

Based on renderings of the forthcoming next-gen Z car, many people praised the look of the rear end, especially its throwback taillight homage to the second-generation (Z32) 300ZX car. The front end, however, was more polarizing. A somewhat shapeless outline and large, gaping grille makes us wonder if Nissan's designers simply phoned in the new front look. 

This is all speculation until we see the real car in the flesh, but photographer Larry Chen notes that even if the factory front end isn't visually interesting, the aftermarket will find a way to make it work.

As a photographer, Larry Chen says he's most interested to shoot the new Z at night to see how it reacts to light, especially given the car's history of interesting and compelling colors such as burnt orange and purple. Given today's increasingly monochromatic color choices, a new Z with some wild color options would be a welcome change.
