A modified GT-R is a ruined GT-R, says Finally Legal host Justin Kaehler. Bold statement, but Justin walks us through his reasoning. Case in point: Just because you can push the Nissan Skyline GT-R to stratospheric levels of horsepower doesn't mean you should.

Nissan Skyline GT-R: Best Left Alone

The GT-R built its legend on the racetrack, where handling, response and predictability are more important that gonzo horsepower numbers. The owner of this R32 GT-R keeps it close to the original formula, with a factory engine that's been upgraded to Nismo (Nissan in-house performance brand) spec. That's performance pedigree with factory reliability. Larger R34 turbos are used for improved flow, and all told, the inline-6 engine makes about 400 horsepower.

Nissan Skyline GT-R: Precision Better Than Power

Ohlins coilovers and ultra-rare Nismo wheels highlight this R32's minimal handling and style modifications, while the interior is similarly understated. The seats come from an R34 Skyline and the steering wheel from the Nismo catalog. There's even a double-DIN Kenwood head unit with MiniDisc player. What's more 90's JDM than an in-dash MD player?

Nissan Skyline GT-R: Classic 90's Style Inside And Out

Even with "just" 400-odd horsepower, the Nismo-tuned R32 can make you pucker when you step into it. Even though this is host Justin's first time piloting one of the classic Skyline models, he immediately notices his preference for the R32's analog driving feel, as opposed to the more digital feeling of today's Skyline successor, the Nissan GT-R (R35).

Nissan Skyline GT-R: Legendary For Good Reason

After driving the Nismo-tuned version of the R32's six-cylinder mill, now we're curious how it compares to an R32 with the "standard" RB26DETT engine. The regular six-cylinder is rated at 280 horsepower, but this is simply a number Japanese manufacturers once agreed upon for advertising purposes. Still, many enthusiasts have run a stock-issue R32 on a dyno and most have come pretty close to that 280 hp number when corrected for driveline losses.
