With so many great cars available domestically, why would a Japanese tuning shop want to drift an Audi in competition? The boys from Japanese tuning shop Span Racing Technology have a simple answer: because it's different!

With massive fenders, big splitter and wing and crazy aero mods, this drift Audi's profile is inspired by the cars in Germany's famed DTM racing series.

Heyman Robbie: Drifting A V8 Audi In Japan

The engine bay in Span's Audi drift car is as nuts as the aggressive exterior. A cast-iron block version of General Motors's LS engine is the beating heart of this drift platform. 

The alcohol-fed V8 makes an estimated 780-800 horsepower and uses fortified hoses and fittings from Kinokuni, one of Span's sponsors, making the Audi something of an R&D platform as well. The Audi's narrow strut towers forced some imagination when it came to fabricating the steel/titanium headers.

With the exception of the factory dashboard (mandated by sanctioning body rules), this Audi is all race inside: full rollcage, Bride seats and sensors monitoring multiple systems and car conditions. Underneath, its Bilstein coilovers with Eibach springs and an array of custom control arms and steering knuckles — even air jacks. This build is detailed and meticulous.

Robbie takes the V8 Audi out on the track and is rendered speechless behind the wheel. This car is just raw, loud speed. It doesn't feel as heavy as the Span guys suggested, Robbie says later, but there's no question that the car is a tire-killing torque beast.
