Ken Negoro of Japanese tuner shop Unparalleled gives us a walkaround of his 1996 Nissan Skyline GTR (R33). With its stitch-welded body, Vortec wing, and carbon hood, the R33 feels lighter than it really is. It doesn’t hurt that around 600 horsepower comes from the RB26 with HKS 2.8 stroker kit.

Unparalleled’s Ken Negoro wanted to improve on the driving skills he learned in front-drive Hondas, so he chose a 2006 Lotus Exige to master short-wheelbase, rear-drive dynamics. This Exige has Unparalleled custom Rays wheels, Yokohama tires, and tuned exhaust. Someday, Negoro plans a Honda K-Series engine swap.

Most of Unparalleled’s customers are in their 20s and 30s, so the shop focuses on lightweight, affordable performance cars like Honda Civic and Mazda Miata. It also hosts monthly track days and invites pro drivers who offer personal instruction, That kind of feedback also helps customers make future buying and tuning decisions.

Unparalleled Chooses "Easy On The Wallet" Racing

Unparalleled runs two older Honda Civics in endurance races, which also serves as a shakedown exercise for original product testing. Parts that survive the sustained competition are deemed good enough to offer for sale. The shop’s two cars placed first and second at this year’s Ebisu 12-hour race.

Unparalleled Battle-Tests Original Parts Through Endurance Racing

Two of Unparalleled’s customer cars are built Mazda Miatas (called “Roadster” in Japan). One is a 1999 model with rebuilt engine and differentials, and replaced transmission. The other is a daily driver/track car with BC coilovers and some aero. Both are tastefully modified for learning the best lines.

One of Unparalleled’s customers owns this Honda Civic EF9 with B18C engine swap, aftermarket cams, and Haltech engine control module. Blowing up the transmission is painful since parts are hard to come by, so a sequential gearbox is next on this customer’s list.
