The new Supra’s exhaust design is a complex piece of engineering, balancing both power and compliance to sound and emissions regulations. Fujitsubo engineer, Mr. Suzuki, shows how the company’s aftermarket design improves the factory spec with rounder piping and less restrictive exhaust flow.

Toyota GR Supra: How Fujitsubo Improves OEM Exhaust

The underbody of the new Supra is a study in packaging efficiency, which doesn’t leave aftermarket exhaust designers with much margin. One notable feature of the Fujitsubo exhaust is its spring-and-mesh housing surrounding the catalyst, allowing the system to flex when the engine shifts, thus reducing the potential for cracking.

Despite having the same number of cylinders, an inline-six engine, like that fitted to the new A90 GR Supra, has a distinct “feel” from a V6, a subtle difference in response and low-end surge, especially when fitted with the Fujitsubo exhaust. This Supra makes 430 horsepower.

Sports cars are all about feel, and with its BMW roots, the Supra feels somewhere in between an M2 and M3 in size. But Toyota intended the Supra to be more of a grand touring-style car, and the acoustic isolation almost mutes too much of the exhaust’s sweet song.

For drivers that sit on the right-hand side, like those in Japan, the new Supra has a maddening detail: The turn signal stalk is on the left-hand side of the steering column. RHD drivers may find themselves smearing their windshields with increasing frustration.

Japan places strict limits on exhaust noise, as do many other countries. Fujitsubo’s manufacturing facility features an in-house lab for testing volume levels, as well as an outdoor decibel-measuring area. The Supra exhaust features a remote-opening exhaust flap, which makes it louder, but not obnoxiously so.
