Real autonomous cars driving on a track — how does one enjoy watching a robot race? Watching a race on Twitch, for example, viewers will see virtual objects that "racers" at the physical track will not. The next step is to have spectators see virtual objects and the track layout using phones.

There are  two types of teams that compete in Roborace. "We have commercial teams that are working on products for a living, and we also have university teams that are really on the forefront of the interesting thing between commercial and university teams," says Roborace chief Chip Pankow.

University teams are given a seat at the table at Roborace, says chief Chip Pankow. The goal is for them to publish as much of their findings and research to help advance the technology. Commercial teams, by contrast, own their proprietary software.
